The Fine Line Between Creativity and Chaos

My daughter LOVES to create. Whether it be an art project, writing stories, building contraptions out of trash (like cardboard and plastic that normally I would throw out), or building clubhouses all over my house out of toys, laundry baskets and small pieces of furniture -- the girl is always thinking of new and inventive ways to use things.

I love the imaginative way her mind works. But can I just tell you that as much as I do not want to crush her creative spirit -- her constant "building" turns my home into complete chaos. Each time I clean up one area -- she has moved on to another and transformed it.

The good thing is, she actually is playing and usually one or both of her brothers plays with her. They have so much fun and I'm glad when they are playing this way instead of asking for computer time, movies or video games for a while. But boy -- it creates a mess.

I will probably never have a "fancy", well-decorated house. My house is very lived in and I'm usually okay with that. But there are plenty of times when I think, "Why in the world do I bother?" with the picking up, the cleaning -- it usually feels so pointless. Then I remind myself that there will come a day when I won't have Legos and Littlest Pet Shop toys underfoot. When my laundry basket will be just that -- a basket for folded clothes, not the wall or roof of a clubhouse. And I am 100% certain I will miss it.

I haven't taken many "clubhouse" photos, but I had to share some of her other handiwork.

This first photo, she informed me is a character she created named "Evil Professor Bunny Hat" but he goes by "Bunny Hat".

The second photo is a Halloween decoration she created yesterday. She used some of my Stickles (glitter) to create a web -- it actually looks quite cool!

And this is one of many stories she has written -- my scan is horrible, but I just had to share the story because it cracks me up. She doesn't always like my help to spell the words, so allow me to type her words -- and then translate where necessary!

The Dog and the Cat -- by Rachel

Wuse there wre a cat. She wuse aloone. (Once there was a cat. She was alone.)

Then a dog came and sall the cat. (Then a dog came and saw the cat.)

The cat likes the dog. The dog likes the cat.

But thene tay rilis that tay wre ole 5. (But then they realized they were only 5.)

But then thae wre 19!
(But then they were 19!)

Then the dog ask her for a date to dinr.
(a date to dinner, of course!)

Then the dog ask this hr to mere him. (Then the dog asked this her to marry him.)

The End.

I think I can live with some clutter and chaos if it means encouraging a creative mind like this one!

Have a good week!

Yup, I can live with a messy house (and I do) if a child can be creative and express that.

Looks like a cute book she wrote. Love it.

That is so funny. The translations make it even funnier.

Yeah, the fort thing. It makes me mad when they get out 20 blankets but "I can't reach to put them back". Hmmm, how did they get them down? I have found a Fort thing I will email you.

She is very creative, and so cute too!

I love the story - she is too adorable and very creative. I just want to know what happened next - are there plans for a sequel? Did the cat say yes, or did she callously crush the dog's heart beneath her paws? Did they live happily ever after? :)

Oh Rita...she's a budding author...what could make you more proud!

I love it. I wonder where she could possibly get that creativity from? I know Matt has the bug a teeny bit, but you know that she gets it mostly from you.

Now, you just need to teach her to clean like you do too and everything will turn out o.k.

Goodness, I agree, I'd live with her creativity no matter what! What an imagination she has!!!
I can't wait to see what her future holds!

Oh Rita your daughter reminds me so much of Crystal at that age. She loved playing Ramona(after the books) and once squeezed a whole tube of toothpaste into the since just like Ramona did. lol And YES you certainly will miss it when they're grown. Love those back to school pics. Their ice cream looks delicious. Hope you had one too!

See I knew she was a special girl, besides just being a cutie! Which you know I have said that one a few times. But she is!
The forts, that is one thing I did as a kid, but neither of my girls ever did that. I think I kinda miss having that happen, it was such a kid memory of mine. Now the story telling and drawing, is so like my Sarah. That is exactly how I could describe her. She could spend all her time in my scrap room, if I allowed her assess to my supplies. Don't worry she has her own supplies, and we head to my Mom's store so she can make cards there, saves on mess clean up and she can use her supplies. LOL See another reason if you were closers, we could hang out there, and let the girls be creative.
Tell Rachel I loved her "dog & cat" story, and her spider drawing is really good, maybe you could have her draw her spider in with a black marker..wink!
